Fine art storage facilities in Dubai, compared on what they state

Twelve Dubai and UAE facilities say they store art. Four publish temperature and humidity figures, and two of those come with a warning. The rest describe conditions in words, which is the first thing to press them on.

Brink's figures come from a blog post marked “Modified 6 Years ago”. Green Sky's come from a blog, and its home page FAQ says “Most rooms are not” climate-controlled. Vachi's current page is vachistorage.com/art-storage, and its humidity figure is a ceiling with no floor.

What the word “facility” is hiding

Three different businesses use the same phrase. A storage operator with an art page, such as Vachi or StorageKeys, rents you a climate-controlled room at a price you can see, and quotes handling separately. A free zone store such as Equinox or Brink's holds work inside a customs boundary. An art logistics firm such as Crown, DIETL or Dubai Fine Arts sells storage as one part of crating, shipping and hanging.

None of these is a lesser version of another. A collector who rotates eight works through a Jumeirah villa has a different problem from a gallery sending a show to Basel. Pricing follows the model: only two general operators, Vachi and Green Sky, print a number.

Questions a good facility can answer in one email

  1. What did this room read last August? A band on a web page is a target. Ask for logged temperature and humidity from the hot months.
  2. What is the humidity floor? Only Equinox, Brink's and Green Sky publish one.
  3. What happens in a power cut? Chubb's checklist names centrally monitored climate and back-up generators (Chubb).
  4. What puts a fire out? Chubb asks for fire resistive construction and central station alarms. Water sprinklers and gas are very different events for a canvas.
  5. Does my insurer know this building? Ask your broker whether the carrier approves of the facility before you sign.
  6. Who has access? Get the list in writing, and ask how it changes when a named person leaves your staff.

Names you will see that this guide could not confirm

Athena, the Dubai Freeport. Search results and some AI answers still name it. athena.ae gave an SSL error when checked, and a separate page still counts down to “Opening June 2024”. Its operating status is unknown, so it has no label here. Call before you count on it.

Dubai Free Port at Dubai South. The government media office announced it in 2021. An announcement does not show that a building is open, and this guide found nothing that does.

Safe deposit vaults. HBS Prive, 818 Vault, KeepSecure and Private Vaults run box businesses. Their pages name no art storage, so a rolled canvas might fit and a framed painting probably will not. Ask them directly.
